Easy Wheely: Facilitating Autonomy for Wheelchair Users through Circular Design

"Why replace an entire wheelchair when only the wheel is worn out? That felt absurd. With Easy Wheely, I aimed to develop a wheel that is smarter, more durable, and user-friendly."

We spoke with Wannes van Laerhoven about Easy Wheely, his circular alternative to conventional wheelchair wheels. We discussed the impact of circular design, challenges in the healthcare sector, and his participation in the Healthcare Challenge.

How did you come up with the idea to develop circular wheelchair wheels?

The idea was born while traveling. I saw a massive waste pile made up of discarded wheels. It got me thinking about a more sustainable approach - developing a wheel that is easier to use, repair, and ultimately more beneficial for users. My journey of experimentation began.

During that period, I temporarily ended up in a wheelchair and experienced firsthand how uncomfortable the rigid front wheels were. They didn't absorb shocks and struggled over uneven surfaces. This personal experience motivated me to look for a better solution.

I also discovered how many hospital wheelchairs were discarded just because the front wheels were worn out. That felt absurd. Why replace the entire wheelchair when only the wheel needs to be renewed? That was the moment I knew: I had to design a smarter and more sustainable wheel.

What makes Easy Wheely wheels unique?

We developed a fully modular wheel. Each component can be replaced individually, eliminating the need for an entirely new wheel. This approach saves materials, costs, and reduces waste. We also work exclusively with mono-materials, which simplifies reuse and recycling.

Additionally, we created a tool allowing wheelchair users to replace their own bearings, reducing dependency on external repair services. We also added hair covers to prevent hair and dirt from getting trapped in the wheels. Beyond offering a better product, our mission is to enhance the autonomy of wheelchair users.

How do you hope to make an impact in the healthcare sector?

Sustainability alone is not always a convincing argument in healthcare. That's why we focused on adding real value. Comfort is a major advantage: our wheels absorb shocks better, making them ideal for hospitals, rehabilitation centres, and reception areas.

We also learned that hospitals often discard wheelchairs simply because replacing parts is seen as too much hassle. Our modular design offers a solution: replace only what's necessary. But for this model to gain traction, we need to understand how hospitals operate and how decisions are made.

Why did you decide to participate in the Healthcare Challenge?

I previously participated in a broader, cross-sector program of the Circular kickstart. When I heard about the Healthcare Challenge, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to test our business model within the healthcare sector.

One of the biggest challenges for start-ups in this sector is gaining access to the right stakeholders. We had been trying to connect with hospitals, but it proved difficult due to their complex structures, limited time, and maintenance contracts. The Healthcare Challenge now gives us access to the network we need.

What do you hope to achieve by the end of the Challenge?

We aim to gain insights into hospital processes and explore how we can integrate our product into their workflows. The goal is to develop a scalable business model that can expand to other hospitals.

Above all, we want to make a difference for wheelchair users. They are at the heart of our design. If we can improve their mobility and comfort, we know we’re on the right path.

In the long term, we aim for international expansion and collaboration with major producers and maintenance services. We believe our wheels can not only benefit wheelchair users but also be applied to hospital carts and other medical equipment.

Why should start-ups consider joining the Circular kickstart?

You are surrounded by like-minded entrepreneurs and coaches with diverse expertise who elevate your start-up. The small groups encourage interaction, and there is a welcoming, community atmosphere. In sector-specific editions like the Healthcare Challenge, the added benefit is gaining access to your ideal target audience (in this case: hospitals) and receiving unique opportunities to validate your concept where access would otherwise be nearly impossible.

Missed out on the Circular Kickstart Healthcare Challenge this year? Don’t worry - there are more opportunities ahead! If you’re developing a circular solution and want to drive real change, keep an eye out for future accelerator programmes. Join a community of innovators working towards a sustainable future!
